Innovative artificial pancreas can help diabetic patients finely regulate blood sugar

Release date: 2014-06-18

According to foreign media reports, researchers have announced that artificial pancreas can help diabetics to live normally without the need for routine insulin injections.

New devices also bring hope to curbing the obesity-related diabetes epidemic.

The artificial pancreas is much like an iPod that can be clipped to a patient's clothing with a small screen that can pump insulin through the skin.

The device maintains normal blood glucose levels by continuously monitoring blood glucose and then pumping a specific dose of insulin. In the first clinical trial of the device, 24 British patients with type 1 diabetes were wearing the device for one month at home, and no insulin was injected during the wear period.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge led the latest study, saying that artificial lines can not only benefit people with type 1 diabetes, but also help people with type 2 diabetes.

The findings were published in the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrine Journal. The study plans to implement larger trials to allow more people with diabetes to participate in the trial and extend the monitoring time.

If the research is successful, the device will eventually be used by the UK NHS as a conventional treatment device.

Researchers are not currently pricing the equipment accurately, but similar equipment in the United States has been affected by a disaster of about £5,000.

Dr. Roman Hovorka, the research leader, said the system has the advantage of being able to fine-tune insulin administration while also taking into account differences in nocturnal insulin requirements. The system can safely handle these differences for a smoother control of blood sugar. The equipment is suitable for a wide range of people.
