In 1998, Shirley Anderson developed a fatal tumor on his tongue, which the doctor diagnosed as cancer. Subsequently, the doctor performed a series of surgery and radiation therapy and destroyed Shirley's lower half. The treatment of malignant tumors often causes serious damage to other parts of the body. Although doctors have tried a variety of methods, the results are not good. The radium implant of the chin destroyed Shirley's facial muscles, and the doctor removed some of his chest muscles for facial repair, but failed. Since then, Shirley can hardly eat and talk. Because he couldn't eat solid food, Shirley weighed 80 pounds and could only communicate with people by writing on a small whiteboard. Frustration and challenges hang over everyone.
The challenge lasted for several years, and until 2012, Shirley met Dr. Travis Bellicchi, a specialist in maxillofacial prosthetics and a resident of the Indiana University School of Dentistry. It is said that Shirley is the most difficult patient to treat in Dr. Bellicchi's career. Because of the complexity of chin damage, Shirley needed a prosthesis that was four times larger than normal. Dr. Bellicchi eventually produced a silicone model for Shirley and hand-painted it to precisely match Shirley's complexion. The implementation of the whole process is very difficult, and in terms of comfort, the results are not perfect.
Dr. Bellicchi said: "The prosthesis is very uncomfortable to wear. Shirley can only wear it for up to four hours at a time, and often slides down. Its surface lacks the real details of the skin, I know it's time to take a digital solution." .
