Eating textured snails in the summer as food poisoning

Recently, media reported that 58-year-old Chen Axuan of Luoyuan, Fuzhou, had eaten two or two snails. Unfortunately, poisoning was a coma. The Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention reminded the masses not to buy or eat wheat snails.

The scientific name of the snails is the snail, the common name snails, the sea snails, the sea lion snails, or the white snails. In some places, they are also called snails, small yellow snails, and snails, etc. They are widely distributed along the coast of China. The shape features a sharp tail and a slender spiral body about 1 cm in length and 0.5 cm in width.

The main cause of snail poisoning is the accumulation of toxic bacteria in the red tide water and the contained tetrodotoxin. Tetrodotoxin is a highly toxic, non-protein neurotoxin with 1,250 times the toxicity of potassium cyanide, and 0.5 mg can cause death. Tetrodotoxin is stable and heat-resistant, and general heating methods such as frying, stewing, firing, and boiling cannot destroy toxins. The early manifestations of snail poisoning are numbness of the lips, tongue tip, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, followed by general numbness, slurred speech, quadriplegia, and respiratory paralysis. Tetrodotoxin poisoning has no special antidote.

In summer, it is the period of strong production of snails, and it is also the period of high incidence of poisoning of contaminated snails consumed by consumers. In July 2012, the Ministry of Health issued a notice requiring the ban on sales and consumption of textured snails due to a number of poisoning incidents caused by the consumption of weed snails in Zhejiang and other places. In the same year, the Shenzhen Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention conducted investigations in various aquatic products wholesale markets in Shenzhen and found no cases of sales of snails.

Because of the different water areas and seasons, the algae eaten by the woven snails may be toxic or not toxic, and the amount of toxicants is not the same. This explains why some people are poisoned by eating snails, while Others are not poisoned. However, for prudent reasons, it has been suggested in the near future that we should not eat textured snails.
