1. Cross section of the stem: The epidermis is a column, square or rectangular, and the outer layer is stratum corneum, showing the stomata and epidermis papillae. The cortex is a series of parenchyma cells. Occasionally, calcium oxalate acicular crystals are observed. The endothelial layer is obvious and the cells are large. The phloem is wider. The formation layer is not obvious. The xylem connects into a ring. The pith cells are large and occasionally calcium oxalate crystals are seen.

Leachables: As determined by the hot dip method (Appendix X A) of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia under the alcohol soluble leachate assay, using 70% ethanol as the solvent, not less than 5.0%.
