South Korea found super pneumococci: almost tolerant of all antibiotics

Release date: 2014-07-15

According to South Korea's "Central Daily News" reported on July 9, South Korea recently showed pneumococci that can resist almost all commonly used antibiotics in elderly patients in domestic nursing homes. The bacterium is a "super bacterium" produced by the abuse or misuse of antibiotics.

Professor Jiang Zheren from the Department of Infectious Diseases of Samsung Hospital in Seoul, South Korea, conducted a survey of 510 pneumonia patients who were treated in hospitals between 2011 and 2012. As a result, "a wide range of antibiotic-resistant pneumococci" was found in five of them. Professor Jiang published the results of the survey in the academic journal of the US Department of Disease Management (CDC) on the 8th. The article states that these patients can resist six of the eight antibiotics commonly used to treat pneumococci, with only a weak response to the other two antibiotics.

Professor Wu Mingdun of Seoul National University Hospital pointed out that although pneumococcal antibiotic resistance is already common, pneumococci like this which is resistant to almost all antibiotics may not have been found in other countries.

It is reported that patients who were found to carry super "pneumococcal" were elderly people who received antibiotic treatment in nursing homes all year round. Their average age was 71.8 years. Professor Wu pointed out that nursing homes are places where the elderly live collectively. The spread of bacteria is very fast, and the nursing homes are not equipped with professional doctors in infectious medicine. There is a phenomenon of abuse of antibiotics, which promotes the tolerance of bacteria.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea recommends that nursing homes treat patients with serious illnesses to avoid the spread of tolerant bacteria. Samsung Hospital also said that it will carefully select antibiotics and actively vaccinate patients with pneumococcal vaccine.

Shaft Collars

Shaft Collar

Shaft Collars are common pieces of hardware used for holding bearings and sprockets to shafts, situate components in motor and gearbox assemblies, and serve as mechanical stops. Shaft collars can be found in virtually any type of machinery and are frequently accessories to other components. Shaft collars provide three primary functions: 1) holding components in place, 2) locating or positioning components on a shaft, and 3) creating an attachment between shaft and another component. Despite their simple design, shaft collars play an important role in a wide range of industrial applications.

Yokelink Shaft Collars come in both inch and metric sizes and are available in either Carbon steel or 304 Stainless Steel. Yokelink shaft collars includes set-screw collars as well as one-piece (single-split) and two-piece (double-split) collars with zinc plated or black oxide finish.
