In order to relieve menopausal symptoms, some women seek treatment with acupuncture. Acupuncture is the mainstay of long-term use of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and is sometimes touted as a natural means of addressing hormonal changes that are typically experienced in menopausal women.
While studies on acupuncture and menopause have yielded different results, there is some evidence that acupuncture can help alleviate hot flashes like menopausal symptoms and sleep disturbances.
Science and menopause behind acupuncture
Acupuncture can help reduce hot flashes during menopause and can be published under a study review in 2010.
The publication of the previous year’s review of the previous year did not find any evidence that acupuncture could prevent hot flashes. The authors of this review analyzed 11 clinical trials (with 764 patients), some of which performed more effective acupuncture than hormone therapy for the treatment of menopausal symptoms. However, the author points out that many of the studies analyzed are small and of poor quality.
Individual studies have shown that acupuncture can help alleviate menopause related problems as well as improve sleep quality in the quality of life of menopausal women. However, these findings require more research to replicate acupuncture before and can be used as a treatment for menopausal symptoms.
Other natural ways menopause
If you are looking for a natural way to relieve menopausal symptoms, there is some evidence that practicing yoga and/or taking herbal supplements (such as black cohosh, red clover, and soy) may provide some benefits. It should be noted - with acupuncture - there is limited scientific evidence to support the use of herbs and yoga in reducing menopausal symptoms.
What if you use acupuncture during menopause?
Although acupuncture has not been proven effective in treating menopausal symptoms, treatment is generally considered safe and may provide other health benefits. To manage your menopausal symptoms, consider strategies such as following a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate self-care of sleep. If you are considering the use of acupuncture for treatment of menopausal symptoms and treatment (or chronic health conditions), be sure to consult your doctor before starting your acupuncture session.
