Last month, WeChat released the sugar doctor. In fact, the joint Sannuo and Yicheng jointly released three WeChat blood glucose meters. Li Chengzhi, CEO of Sugar Nurse, told the author that their mobile blood glucose meter sold more than 30,000 units in 2014.
Two sets of data
In the current market, if the mobile phone blood glucose meter, Bluetooth blood glucose meter and WeChat blood glucose meter are collectively referred to as smart blood glucose meters, their total sales volume is only a few of the traditional blood glucose meters (such as Sannuo sold 4 million blood glucose meters last year, among which Most are traditional blood glucose meters). Compared with the total number of diabetic patients in China (90 million+ in 2012), the sales of all blood glucose meters are only a small one.
According to 14 years of data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of elderly patients with diabetes in the United States reached 29 million, and industry insiders told us that the proportion of blood glucose meters purchased and used is about 90%. That is to say, the old US has a total of 1/3 of the total number of potential users, and the total number of blood glucose meters consumed is more than 10 million.
Liu Yi, the founder of iHealth and the chairman of Jiu'an Medical , told us that the reason is probably the coverage of blood glucose meters in the past US health insurance policy (before the implementation of the new policy of medical insurance, a blood glucose test paper of about 1 US dollar can almost subsidize 0.8 US dollars) And the awareness of blood sugar management for all. Both of these points are weak in the country.
iHealth's smart blood glucose meter has been sold in the US and Europe for two years. Liu Yi said that the reason why it was not sold in China was that it was difficult to judge the reaction of the domestic market to the smart blood glucose meter.
Changes in the US market
As mentioned above, the health insurance policy has a huge impact on blood glucose meters. One of the changes that blood glucose meters are facing in the United States is that in Obama’s new health insurance policy, its subsidies will not be as obvious as it used to be.
That is to say, several blood glucose meter manufacturers with traditional advantages such as Roche, Johnson & Johnson, Abbott and Bayer have relatively high sales prices after losing subsidies, which is beneficial to affordable products such as iHealth.
Secondly, there are few brands of FDA-approved smart blood glucose meters in the United States, and currently only iHealth and IBGstar are currently available.
What about the Chinese market?
The decline of the medical insurance aura, blood glucose meters and blood glucose test strips gradually turned to the competition in the parity market, which is more and more like the US market and the domestic market (WeChat also claims to launch very cheap blood glucose test strips).
Liu Yi said that compared with blood pressure meters and weight scales (iHealth is also operating other health care hardware), the characteristics of blood glucose meters are soaring in the past two years. For a regular user, a user needs to use about 500 pieces of blood glucose test strips per year, and nearly 30 million users in the United States. This is a market that easily breaks tens of billions of dollars. Compared with the United States, Liu Yi believes that if WeChat's blood glucose meter is a product with high spread and high conversion like WeChat red envelope (turning all WeChat users into WeChat payment users), then its stimulation to the domestic blood glucose meter market is huge. . Of course, we have not seen such a chemical reaction yet.
Liu Yi revealed that their new blood glucose meter BG1 has just won this year's innovation award at CES, and iHealth's blood glucose meter is also planned to be listed in China this year.
