In recent years, fitness trackers have become a more popular wearable technology product. However, engineers at the University of California at Berkeley took this concept one step further and developed tiny wireless sensors to detect health in the human body.

These devices are only about one grain in size and will be implanted in the body. They will be there to detect tissue, muscle and nerves in real time. The researchers described their invention in the journal Neuron, published on August 3.

Not only that, these sensors not only do not require the use of batteries but can also be used to stimulate nerves and muscles. This will likely provide a means of treating disorders such as epilepsy or activating the body's immune system. This device has been implanted in the muscles and peripheral nerves of rats and uses ultrasound as a source of energy and reads the collected data.

The sensor has been shrunk to one cubic millimeter and is called "neural dust", which contains a piezoelectric crystal. The author of the paper explains that the crystal converts the ultrasonic vibrations emitted by the human body into electricity to drive a tiny transistor in the device that is directly attached to a nerve or muscle fiber.

This implant technology detects nerve or muscle activity in any part of the body in real time.

The researchers explained that the device can also be used to drive prostheses.

The voltage peaks within the fiber cause changes in the current loop and crystal vibrations, such that the ultrasonic receiver (currently still the source that emits ultrasonic vibrations) detects the echo. Since ultrasound technology is very common in hospitals and ultrasound vibrations can penetrate most of the body, it looks like a natural choice.
