Recently, it is reported that pharmaceutical giant Pfizer will abandon research and development of new neuroscience projects, including potential therapies for Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. With the release of this news, as many as 300 jobs were fired.

In its recently published financial report, Pfizer announced its latest product line, including discontinued projects. In the field of neuroscience, the company said it is terminating eight research and development projects. Two of them are in the second phase of the trial phase, while the other six are in the first phase. The two phase II projects that were terminated were PF-06372865 for epilepsy treatment and PF-06649751 for Parkinson's disease treatment.

The six research directions in the first phase are all Alzheimer's disease. Two other drug candidates for the first phase trial were used to treat cognitive impairment and schizophrenia.

When Pfizer announced plans to cancel neuroscience research and development before the JPMorgan Healthcare conference, the company said it was part of the “redistribution of portfolio costs”. Pfizer said the company hopes to use its resources to fully develop its product lines and patents. This statement shows that Pfizer believes that these neuroscience projects do not have much financial return potential in the future.

The development of clinical trials for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease has proven to be a huge investment, and the results of the three trials of multiple therapies have been poor, and all the efforts have often proved to be futile.

Just last week, Takeda Pharmaceutical announced that an advanced study of experimental Alzheimer's disease failed. After the interim analysis, Takeda and development partner Zinfandel have completed the five-year third phase TOMMORROW test. At the same time, Eli Lilly released the failed EXPEDITION3 trial data, which is expected to demonstrate the breakdown of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. However, the final test results did not verify the results of the early Solanezumab trial. However, Lilly responded that it would still choose to continue developing treatments for Alzheimer's disease.

In addition to terminating eight neuroscience projects, Pfizer also terminated four oncology programs, including a Phase III study using Bavencio as a third-line treatment for gastric cancer.

The company also terminated its first phase of research on nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The project is investigating a myeloperoxidase inhibitor for the treatment of liver disease.

Although Pfizer has terminated its new neuroscience research and development field, the company said it intends to launch a new venture fund focused on neuroscience research. The fund will work with Pfizer's venture capital fund, the Dementia Discovery Fund. The fund was launched in 2015. In addition to Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline and Lilly also participated in the fund's investment. (Sina Pharmaceutical Compilation / Fan Dongdong)
