More than a month ago, 36-year-old Mr. Chen was diagnosed with viral pneumonia. During his treatment, his condition has turned sharply and he has continued to develop life-threatening hypoxemia. For example, with traditional treatment methods, the expected mortality rate is close to 100%. After the expert decided, Mr. Chen was transferred to Zhongshan Hospital for external membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment. After two weeks of ECMO treatment and four weeks of ventilator assistance, Mr. Chen was discharged on February 2nd.
The principle of ECMO is to take the venous blood from the body out of the body, and then inject it into the patient's arterial or venous system through special material artificial cardiopulmonary bypass oxygenation, which can partially replace the cardiopulmonary and maintain the oxygen supply of human organs.
According to Zhong Ming, deputy director of the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Zhongshan Hospital, ECMO is the most complicated medical technology in critical care. Among the disease difficulty factors compiled by Shanghai Shenkang, the difficulty coefficient of ECMO is as high as 37.06. Zhongshan Hospital took the lead in launching ECMO technology in 2009. It is the first hospital in Shanghai to carry out this technology. It is the first time in the world to report the use of ECMO technology to successfully treat large-scale pulmonary embolism after surgery.
