In an experiment, American researchers may have discovered a new side effect of paracetamol - the emotional response becomes dull.
This over-the-counter drug is the most common painkiller on the market, but if the results are true, then the drug may reduce pleasure while reducing pain.
Scientists have previously discovered that paracetamol (ie, acetaminophen) has other effects besides alleviating physical pain. In one experiment, the psychological pain of the medication was also alleviated, which meant that the brain used the same circuit to deal with body pain and psychological pain.
But the latest research published in Psychological Science shows that in addition to relieving pain, paracetamol can make our entire emotional response slower.
"In addition to relieving pain, acetaminophen can also be seen as a versatile emotional sedative," explains Geoffrey Durso, a social psychologist at Ohio State University.
Durso conducted an experiment with 82 students. He asked some students to take 1000 mg of acetaminophen, while the other part took a placebo that looked exactly the same. After an hour, the effect began to work, and he allowed the subjects to watch 40 photos in a row. These images are specifically selected to stimulate a strong inner emotional response, including desolate malnourished children, or children who are playing with cats.
Next, participants were asked to rate the photos according to their negative and positive levels, with +5 being the most positive and -5 being the most negative.
After watching the picture, the students watched it again and scored each picture for the second time, this time to point out how strong their emotions were. Zero points indicate that the mood is very weak or not, and 10 points indicates an extremely strong emotional response.
The results of the experiment found that those who took paracetamol were not as strong as the control group. That is to say, the pleasant picture has become less happy, and the painful picture has become less annoying.
"People taking acetaminophen did not produce such a strong emotion relative to those taking a placebo," said Baldwin Way, co-author of the experiment.
However, the difference between the two groups is not very large. The average emotional intensity reported by placebo students was 6.76. For students taking a fever pain, the average emotional intensity after watching the same picture is 5.85.
Durso said he plans to investigate whether other painkillers (such as ibuprofen and aspirin) can produce the same effect.
