US health officials reported on the 26th that the United States found the first case of bacterial infection that is resistant to all known antibiotics. If this superbug spreads, it may pose a serious risk of daily infection.
“We have a risk of being in the post-antibiotic world.†US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director Tom Frieden refers to a case of urinary tract infection in a 49-year-old woman in Pennsylvania. There was no history of travel within five months.
In a speech at the National Press Club luncheon, Frieden said that even Colistin did not control the infection of the case. Colistin is an antibiotic that is specifically designed to fight "nightmare bacteria."
A study published in the American Journal of Microbiology's "Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy" on the 26th reported the infection. The report says that the superbug itself is first infected with a small DNA molecule called plasmid, which carries a gene called mcr-1 that is resistant to colistin.
“This suggests the emergence of truly pan-resistant bacteria,†the study, conducted by the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. "As far as we know, this is the first case of mcr-1 (case) reported in the United States."
According to the study, the patient went to a clinic on April 26, when he had symptoms of urinary tract infection. The report does not provide the current status of the patient. Reuters could not immediately contact the authors of the study for comment.
