In the first dental surgery for virtual reality, leading dental implant supplier Nobel Biocare asked its surgeons to experience their adhesive-free concept through the eyes of the surgeon.
This work, done in collaboration with Dr. Tristan Staas from the Netherlands, is the first time they have produced a virtual reality experience for the dental profession. Dr. Staas is an operating room that is practiced in the operating room during video recording. He wears a custom 360 camera for a caries transplant. A total of six GoPros and six microscopes are attached to the helmet to create a unique first-person perspective.
This immersive surgical experience was unveiled at the International Dental Show (IDS) in Cologne this year and was taken off in all dental displays.
Although most exhibitors put their products in glass boxes, NobelBiocare allows attendees to explore product features in a virtual environment, from a surgeon's point of view, and an assistant next to them. The experience is viewed through the OculusRiftDK2 with a LeapMotion gesture controller to navigate the user interface through hand tracking.
Surgeons who missed the experience at IDS can experience the seminars and exhibitions that NobelBiocare will attend this year.
It is highly attractive to be able to experience products in virtual reality in a profession where surgeons prefer to gain a deeper understanding through practice. Most importantly, the potential of virtual reality to be used as a powerful training and educational tool in the future will have a major impact on many industries, including dentistry.
